Back to basics
Presentation
Back to basics is a well-known expression. It both refers to the simplest and to the most important. In other words, focusing on the essential.
These days the hegemony of Homo Sapiens is being questioned. The environmental impact of human behavior has led to new visions and new philosophies that reconsider Man’s position in the world. Thus, emphasizing that humans are just one species amongst so many others; that all the living is interconnected and part of the big scheme, in which the tiny may be as important as the huge. Each with a different approach, the Danish sculptors Bente Skjøttgaard and Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen and German visual artist Fee Kleiss embrace the current debate.
Bente Skjøttgaard pays a tribute to the oak tree. The slowly growing tree that can live a thousand years is a symbol of time, of digging deeper. In her sculptures of hybrid creatures, Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen shapes the subtle relations and intermingling between species. The paper collages of Fee Kleiss act as a counterpoint to the ceramic matter ; they are inspired by biology, specifically the membranes between an inner and an outer world.
